In order to give our Strivers the best chance of successfully making it from the Matterhorn to the summit of Mount Etna, they are going to need the best support possible. To make sure we are properly equipped, fed, and hydrated, The Virgin STRIVE Challenge 2016 has teamed up with a fantastic array of partners.
We are kicking off the challenge with a 5 day hike. Walking over 70km and 5,000m of elevation means it will be crucial to be properly prepared. We have teamed up with Bergans, a Norwegian brand to provide our hikers with technical clothing. They are supplying our Core Team with full hiking kit and stage participants with hiking shirts and mid layers, for our trek along the Tour de Monte Rosa, from Switzerland to Italy. Whilst the weather should be warm, it can change very quickly in the mountains and so its imperative our strivers are kitted out correctly.
We are delighted to have Halfords back on the road again to support the Strivers on this epic challenge. Their mechanics will be on hand throughout the cycle stages to provide top class support, state of the art Boardman bikes for the core team, a huge range of spares and a lot of motivation too.
With the expert help of Champion System, we have custom designed our cycling attire for STRIVE 2016. Champion System is a worldwide leader in custom technical apparel. They offer the finest quality garments, which have been worn by Olympians, National and World Champions, and recreational athletes of all levels. The Strive Core Team, cycling participants & triathletes will be wearing a Champion System Airpro Jersey, Gilet and Cap. This gives our strivers the perfect mixture of aero-dynamics, comfort, and coolness.
The Core Team and Triathletes will be taking on a gruelling 3.7KM swim around the shores of Sicily. To keep our swimmers afloat, our partner Speedo, has provided our Core Team with top class Tri-Comp wetsuits to wear as they tackle the Straits. They have also provided the triathletes with swimming costumes, and some super slick Strive sponsor branded swimming caps!
Blitz Fitness is an award winning outdoor fitness business founded in 2009 by Lara Milward and Karen Crump. Lara was a core team member in 2014 and this year she’s back for the 2016 Strive Challenge bringing Blitz clients with her. Lara has played an integral role in preparing the core team in the run up to Strive, once a competitive swimmer herself, she has been coaching the Core Team and triathletes in their preparation for swimming the Straits of Messina, as well as providing more general advice and support.
High5 Sports Nutrition
In Italy it is going to be hitting over 30c most days. Whether we are hiking, cycling or running, keeping hydrated is going to be key. Fortunately, we have High5 Sports Nutrition on board to keep us fuelled all the way from the Matterhorn to Mount Etna. Whilst on the road, participants will be using Zero, the leading electrolyte sports drink for hydration and Energy Source 4:1, the carbohydrate and protein sports drink, for energy. For recovery (vital during a month long challenge!) they will be using Protein Recovery, a drink with 18g whey protein isolate. HIGH5 are also providing their trademark water bottles to all participants as well.
Rastaclat will be Spreading Positive Vibrations on STRIVE , through giving all of our STRIVE participants a custom designed KEEP STRIVING bracelet.
Thank you to all our partners for your sponsorship, we couldn’t Strive to raise £1.5 million for Big Change and change the lives of young people, without your generous support. Your amazing kit and equipment has already sent a buzz of confidence through the entire team that we will all be well equipped to Strive in September – it’s great to have you all as part of the Big Change community!
